What is the Haldex System?
The Haldex All-Wheel Drive Coupling (also known as the AWD Coupling) is the heart of VAG’s 4Motion and Quattro systems.
Developed by BorgWarner, it uses an oil pressure activated clutch pack and electronic control module to send power instantly between the front and rear axles, providing traction, cornering stability, and improved handling in all conditions.
It’s also used in some Land Rover, Saab, and Volvo models, as well as the VAQ front differential (torque splitter) fitted to certain high-performance FWD VAG vehicles.

The “Lifetime Oil” Myth
When VAG first introduced these systems, dealerships incorrectly marketed them as “sealed for life.”
In reality, the manufacturer BorgWarner recommends servicing every 20,000 miles or 24 months (2 years) — regardless of age or model.
Skipping these intervals can lead to:
Pump or controller failure
Blocked filters and strainers
Overheating clutch packs
Full differential or coupling failure

Why Dealer Haldex Servicing Isn’t Enough
Most main dealers only drain and refill the oil, that’s it.
On older systems (GEN 1–4), they’ll even deny the filter exists (it does, we fit genuine BorgWarner replacements).
On GEN 5 systems, they’ll replace the oil but won’t clean the strainer gauze on the pump, meaning they’re just circulating clean oil through a dirty filter.
It’s a bit like “going to the toilet and not wiping afterwards.”
Clean oil through a dirty filter means premature pump failure, something we repair every week.
